EU Monitors Enter Georgia

After days of discussions EU ceasefire monitors made their first entry into the buffer zone designated by the Russians around South Ossetia yesterday . President Medvedev has confirmed that the Russian Military, who still control seven checkpoints around Ossetia and two around Abkhazia, will withdraw as planned by 10th October.
This is an important sign for the peace deal which was drawn up to avoid future conflict. However, the monitors will not be allowed into the two separatist regions , now recognized by Russia as sovereign states.
Almost two months after the outset of hostilities resulting from the Georgian invasion of Ossetia, there now looms the question of allowing the refugees to return. In any case, the Georgians who escaped after the arrival of the Russians are unlikely to get back those towns in the Ossetia territory. It seems rather unlikely that those Georgians who fled with the arrival of the Russians will be able to get back their villages situated in the Ossetia region.
The UE has sent over two hundred unarmed monitors to check the zone. Russian peacekeeping troops- in Ossetia and Abkhazia since 1992- will stay in the two regions, their number will go up to 600 units and they will be provided with bases and infrastructures . This is another of the controversial points of the agreement, reached also thanks to Sarkozy’s negotiations. The Russians are not going to leave/show no intention of leaving and the Georgians are not willing to formally recognize their presence in Abkhazia and Ossetia.

GROUP ORGANISATION

The groups will be divided as follows:
GROUP H1 - Those students whose mark was 25+ in their II year lettorato exam (timetable clashes permitting)
GROUPS H2 and W – The remaining students can choose which group they want to attend.

ATTENDANCE

To be a “frequentante” you need to attend 75% of lessons for EACH SEMESTER (12 out of 16 lessons/24 out of 32 hours). There will be a mid-course exam (written) in December and an end-of-course exam (written and oral) in May, 2010.

LANGUAGE LABORATORY

“ Frequentanti “ must do eight hours of language laboratory in the first semester and eight in the second for a total of 16 hours. There is a lot of new material in the language laboratory. You will be given advice on what material to use during lessons. Conversation classes are also available ( four hours of conversation= eight of language laboratory) which you can sign up for in the lettori office.

COURSE WORK

You will be expected to do a considerable amount of work as preparation for your lessons. Consider for every two-hour lesson at least 2 hours of preparation as private study. This is a fundamental part of your course and you will not get the best out of lessons without consistent study. You will also be set one piece of written work per semester. This work must be brought along to your oral exam.

WRITTEN AND ORAL TESTS

The course will cover upper-intermediate grammar as well as linguistic analysis. The written test has two components: the comparative analysis of Italian and English grammar with translation from Italian to English as the means of assessment and the linguistic analysis of an advertisement. The oral exam will be based on a contrastive analysis of newspapers.

Conversation groups

Anche quest'anno organizziamo conversation groups con studenti americani dell'università di California. Alla sede dell'università di California (piazza dell'orologio,7) fino a 60 studenti possono andare per conversare in inglese (un ora) e in italiano (un ora). Ogni studente nostro sarà con uno studento americano. Il primo incontro sarà giovedì 7 ottobre dalle 9.00 alle 11.00. Si prega gli studenti interessati di iscriversi nella stanza dei lettori. For the oral examination students are required to bring two copies (photocopies) of two articles on the same subject, of their own choice. One must be from a broadsheet newspaper, the other one from a tabloid. The articles must have been published within the seven days preceding the oral examination. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPARE THE LANGUAGE OF THE ARTICLES.

PLEASE remember that you choose the articles on which your final oral examination is based and therefore you must choose suitably and prepare the work carefully.

Please study chapters 6-12 for your test next week as well as the first six chapters you were asked to do previously.
Chapters 33,37,46 and 53 are recommended as preparation for your advert analysis essay.
Chapter 28 covers information technolgy (computer, internet etc...)for those of you who are interested.

Attendance:to be a frequentante you must attend 75% of the course i.e. at least 11 out of 15 lessons (22 out of 30 hours). Frequentanti do an end-of-course esonero (written).

If you do not attend the course, or have less than 75%, or do not pass the esonero you do the written exam during one of the general exam sessions (June 2010 / September 2010 / January 2011). A bilingual dictionary can be used in the exam.

The results speak for themselves. Although a high percentage passed the test ( 75% Group A, 80% group B), only approx. 30% got a mark above 24/30. I’m sure you all know why this has happened : GRAMMAR HAS TO BE STUDIED AND APPLIED PRACTICALLY TO BE ASSIMILATED. The translation part of the test was, in general, done very badly. The slogan analysis instead was good. This means that you are capable of producing good work but are not willing to apply yourselves to a systematic study of language.
I would strongly advise those of you who did not pass or got under 24 to begin a thorough revision of the grammar syllabus, including material covered in second year. The best way to do this is by going through “Grammar Scan” ( upper-intermediate section) and then consulting “Practical English Usage” for the rules you do not understand. You can then begin to do the practice translations in Pudney.
There is also abundant grammar material in the language laboratory to be found under the heading “Nuovo materiale lettorato inglese”. Start with intermediate level as revision and then progress to upper-intermediate/advanced.
