KEY - MAGISTRALE MID-MODULE TEST

KEY

Judge May has been working in the conflict- ridden High  Court Family Division  for twenty years and is greatly admired by  her colleagues for her “divine detachment” and “razor-sharp  intelligence. “ In this court ,where fierce  child custody and inheritance  battles are fought amidst irrational  outbursts of anger, she tries to restore reason to  those hopeless cases  using  reason and pragmatism .
In the course of her work she finds herself having to  rule on  the case of Adam Henry, a handsome 17 year-old Jehovah’s Witness who refuses a potentially life –saving blood transfusion and  is supported  both  by  his family and his religious community in his decision. She calls upon the rational  power of her role and her personal  ethics to “ protect the well-being of the minor” as the Children  Act dictates so  much  so  that  she goes against the will of the minor himself and his family. Putting her professional  ethics to  one side, Fiona decides to  meet the adolescent . Due to  her fragile emotional  state,  she lets herself get involved but only up  to  a certain point, beyond which it is the young man  himself, who  is now of age, that  will have to  make his decisions on  his own  in the  harshest of ways.

Iceland’s Christmas campaign has been banned (1)FROM  TV because it has been deemed to breach political advertising rules. (2)   AS  part of its festive campaign the supermarket struck a deal with Greenpeace to rebadge an animated short film featuring an orangutan and the destruction of (3)ITS  rainforest habitat at the hands of palm oil growers. Earlier this year, Iceland became the first major UK supermarket to pledge to remove palm oil from its own-brand foods. Habitat loss in countries (4)SUCH as Malaysia – a major producer of palm oil – has contributed to the orangutan now (5) BEING classified as critically endangered. Clearcast, the body responsible  (6) FOR vetting ads before they are broadcast to the public, said it was in breach of rules banning political advertising laid down(7) BY the 2003 Communications Act.“ (8) THIS  was a film that Greenpeace made with a voice over by Emma Thompson,” said Iceland’s founder, Malcolm Walker. “We got permission to use it and take off the Greenpeace logo and use it as the Iceland Christmas ad. It (9) WOULD  have blown the John Lewis ad out of the window. It was so emotional.”
One of the stipulations enshrined in the broadcast code for advertising practice (BCAP), is (10) THAT  an ad is prohibited if it is “directed towards a political end”.“Clearcast and the broadcasters have to date been unable to clear (11)THIS  Iceland ad because we  are concerned that it doesn’t comply with the political rules of the BCAP code,” said a spokeswoman for Clearcast. “The creative submitted to us is linked to another organisation who have not (12) YET been able to demonstrate compliance in this area.”
Iceland (13) WILL still be placing TV ads, but only 10-second clips that will highlight palm oil-free products.“We wanted [the Greenpeace film] (14) TO  be our signature campaign,” said Richard Walker, Malcolm’s son, who has led Iceland’s switch (15) TO  environmental campaigning. “We have said repeatedly we are not anti-palm oil, we are anti-deforestation.“We think this is a huge story that needs to (16) BE  told. We always knew there was a risk the clip(17) WOULD  not be cleared for TV (18) BUT we gave it our best shot.”

A.      Put the following text into  English

A young boy receives  / received  the lovely gift  of a piano  as a  Christmas present,   and it ‘s / was precisely that present from  a Christmas time ago that will / would  change his life. The boy in question is Elton John , the pop music icon, and it is he  we see in the John Lewis – a British department store-  commercial in  various stages of his life singing Your Song. The footage is from the biopic Rocket Man, which  will  be in cinemas in 2019. Commenting on  the commercial he said, “ This was an  opportunity for me to reflect on my life and career from  the moment I began to  play the piano  my mother bought for me. Back  then I  didn’t realize just  how important that  present would be .” The commercial’s tagline is ,” Some gifts are more than  just a gift.” As the song goes, “ I could have been  a sculptor or a man  who  makes  potions (but I’m none of these things).”  But he did become Elton John thanks to  his mother’s gift ..  that’s  perhaps why  the text clearly says, “ my gift is my song.”

MAG 1 GROUP B - MID_MODULE EXAM

Here is the translation paper. Complete it before 24th January when I will  publish the key.

 PAPER 2
Translate the text below into  Italian. Use the empty space  below for rough  work.
